Grief

My chest hitches each time Sasha takes a breath. When she exhales, warm tears stream down her face. My eyes are swollen with the effort. We sit on Sasha’s bed, the three of us—me, Sasha and Krystal—linked by arms and sorrow.

Twan is dead.

There’s nothing more definite than death. And at this moment, nothing more painful. You’d think I’d be good at this by now, but grief is the worst emotion ever invented. Give me fear, or pain any day because grief is a hideous evil.

Sasha wonders why Twan had to die. I’m wondering the same thing. Why was he singled out? If the creature came for me he could have just as easily plucked me up and tossed me around. But it hadn’t and I’m beginning to feel really sick about that.

“I should call his grandmother,” Sasha says between sniffles and hiccups.

She’s been doing that, talking sporadically between her tears. It’s all about Twan, about his life and what he was going to do with it. Her heart’s broken and I don’t know how to fix it.

“The police are probably doing that,” Krystal says in a quiet voice.

Once Jake had finally gotten into the car he’d pulled off so fast all I’d seen were the flashing blue-and-red lights of the arriving police cars. In the backseat with me, Krystal had held Sasha, who was crying hysterically. We’d come straight to Sasha’s house, not just because we were supposed to be sleeping over anyway but because this was the one house where we didn’t have to worry about parental or adult supervision. Nobody here would ask what had happened, which is kind of sad and kind of good at the same time.

Mouse had opened the door for us, his face a mask of gloom. He knew what had happened, I could tell by the way he simply moved to the side and let us come in. When we’d walked up the steps with Sasha he hadn’t said a word. At the top of the steps I turned back to look at him and he’d closed the door, was standing at the bottom of the steps, arms folded over his chest watching us. He was planning, I could sense it.

“She won’t understand,” Sasha says. “Nobody’s going to understand.”

I don’t say anything because she’s right. The police are going to be trying to figure out how Twan got up on that roof and if any witnesses were left in the parking lot, they’re probably going to tell the police we were the ones with Twan. We should have stayed there. Should have waited and answered the questions right then. Jake cursed all during the ride back to Sasha’s house. His fingers gripped the steering wheel so hard I thought he was going to rip it right out. We didn’t know what to do right then. None of us did. We don’t know what to do now.

“He wasn’t even one of us,” she sobs, pulling up her knees and burying her face in the pillow she held there.
